Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smashes record 19-ball fifty as India cruise to T20 victory in Harare

Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made history with a breathtaking half-century as India cruised to a seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the opening T20 International in Harare on Thursday.

Playing only his fourth senior international for India, the 15-year-old blasted his maiden T20I fifty from just 18 balls, striking four fours and four sixes in a dazzling display of power hitting.

Sooryavanshi rewrites the record books

Sooryavanshi reached the landmark before falling immediately afterwards, top-edging Richard Ngarava to deep third man after a memorable knock that put India firmly on course for victory.

The innings saw him become the youngest player ever to score a half-century in men's T20 international cricket. He broke the previous record held by Gibraltar's Louis Bruce, who was 16 years and 56 days old when he scored 60 against Malta in August 2021. Sooryavanshi lowered that mark by more than 300 days.

He also became the youngest player from a full-member ICC nation to register a T20I fifty. Afghanistan's Rahmanullah Gurbaz had previously held that distinction after making his maiden half-century against Zimbabwe in Bangladesh in 2019 when he was just short of his 18th birthday.

For India, the record had belonged to Rohit Sharma, who was 20 years and 143 days old when he scored a half-century against South Africa during the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007.

India ease to comfortable victory

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, India restricted Zimbabwe to 125/7 from their 20 overs, with Wessly Madhevere top-scoring with 39 from 34 deliveries.

The modest target never looked enough as India's batters dominated the chase.

Captain Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten on 28 from 24 balls to seal victory, while Ishan Kishan contributed 35 off 24 deliveries as the visitors reached their target with 40 balls to spare.

Iyer praised his young teammate after the match.

"I think the boys were tremendous. Couldn't have been happier with my first win," he said.

"There was bounce from a good length and it was also variable. We are going to play two more matches here, so today's performance gives everyone some confidence.

"I think Vaibhav has played here, he got 175 in the Under-19 World Cup final, so he knows the conditions."

The match also featured several debutants, with Ben Curran making his T20I debut for Zimbabwe, while seamer Newman Nyamhuri also featured for the hosts. India handed a first international appearance to paceman Ashok Sharma.

The second match of the three-game series will be played in Harare on Saturday before the final fixture takes place on Sunday.
